Devil's
Bridge rideout - Sunday 28 Sep 08
Well, I've
checked the weather forecast for the last 5 days and, true to form, it
rained Saturday night. But it's supposed to clear up during the morning so
let's go.
We meet at
Greasy Joes just off the M1 J35a - Flash and me, Pete and Jordan, Lyn and
Stew, Paul and Lisa and Richard. It's overcast but . . . . . . . . . .
At 09.15 we
set off - over to Huddersfield, up and over the M62, then down to Halifax
- which I've re-named Speed Camera Town.
I can't
believe just how many speed cameras there are, up through Halifax and then
over and through Keighly. What a nightmare !
Eventually we
get to Skipton and pick up the A65 to Kirkby Lonsdale. The place is
absolutely packed with bikers and there's a 20 minutes wait for the
double cheeseburger (low fat ofcourse).
I lead off,
in the wrong direction (the first of several today ! ! ! ), double back
and pick up the A683 to Sedbergh, then right to Hawes.
The sun's out
and it's a beautiful day BUT the road to Hawes is sh*te, too twisty,
insufficient visibility and the road surface is cr*p.
I'm
travelling miles too fast and have frightened Flash ! What an idiot I am
- I'm trying to make a rubbish run into something it's not.
Anyway, I
apologise, we consume some fantastic ice-creams, then set off for (in
theory) Northallerton. (Richard leaves on a different route, don't blame
him)
Again, I take
the wrong turn and head UP to Richmond ! ! ! then Catterick ! ! !.
Eventually (time's getting on) and we get to Northallerton,
pick up the
A19 and head south for Thirsk, then onto the York byepass. Here we go
again. I miss-read a sign and we're RIGHT in the MIDDLE of YORK.
F**king
great. I've had enough now and it's 16.30 hrs. Thankfully Pete's got his
sat nav on and working so he dials in the B1222 (west towards Squires)
and we get
out of York, miraculously, and pick up the A19, again.
From there
it's easy peasy, down through Doncaster (where Pete and Jordan and Paul
and Lisa depart). Stew leads on a short cut over to the A1 where we pick
up
the pace and
eventually get home around 18.30 hrs.
Devill's Bridge - I wouldn't bother again. my route there - rubbish. Having said that if we'd have gone up the White Scar road that would have been better. Apologies to all but, as Paul said later, the company was what made it so here's to the next one. |
