It's Sunday
morning, 11 May, and Jaqs (Flash) and me (Shady) arrive at McDonalds M1 J30
- 8.00 for 8.30.
Richard pulls in,
followed by Tall Brian then Kev (The Navigator). We wait for Sue, then Flash
phones her, only to be told when she said
she'd meet us
there she meant NORTHWICH ! ? !
Anyway, Richard
leads off, then Tall Brian, me and Flash, and Nav at the rear.
Down to Stavely,
over to Barrow Hill, New Whit, Sheepbridge and Cutthorpe. Leisurely wind
down to the A619/A621 and into Baslow.
(If I've got any
of this wrong, do I look like I'm bothered).
Up through Stoney
Middleton, Tideswell and join the A6 into Buxton.
Exit on the A54
(very good biking road ! ) turn left to Congleton (watch out for the
bear-in-the-air ! ), right on the A50, and into Northwich on the B5082.
Blinkin blop,
there's bikes everywhere. Anyone'd think there's summat happening here. Oh,
yes, it's the annual Thundersprint weekend.
Anyway, we park
up (just about anywhere will do as it happens), some strip off (you what
Kev, you've forgotten your trainers, never mind, them boots look cool and
cumfy)
and we head into
the shopping centre where we meet up with Pete and Jordan (in the toilet
queue) and Stewart and Lyn (who've camped in the rugby ground).
Not long after,
Sue and bruv turn up and we get some water etc and sarny from the store
(half the price of the stalls outside).
It's very hot and
sunny so we walk round the square looking at the (fairly tatty) merchandise.
We walk and we walk until eventually the "racing" starts. It comprises one
bike and rider at a time bombing
round the square,
as fast as possible, usually in first gear, against the clock. It appears the
"lap" record is 23 seconds (it's a small square) and as captivating as it is
after 5 or 6 riders have looked into the face of death we bugger off.
Where's Richard someone says. We get a text, from Richard, he's gone.
Back to the
bikes, clobber on (god, it's betty swollox now ! ), find our way out and
pick up the A54 and head for home. We make one stop for petrol (after being
attacked by some nutters on bikes
pretending to
race at Cadwell or summat) then Kev suggests we stop at a farm that makes
its own ice cream. Sounds good so we bomb off, find the farm, indulge and
just as we''re ready for the off
we get a text
from Jaks (Miss Fit, Stuart's wife) asking what we're doing. So, just like
that, we invite ourselves round to theirs for a BBQ. Brilliant. What a
fantastic day out with some great guys and gals.
