The ‘Fens for the memory’ Extravaganza A ‘Romin’ rideout presented by Nog & Liz. As ever with Liz and me, a rideout with a historical destination. Never mind medieval turf mazes, Neolithic standing stones or Victorian coastal forts. This place has (for this weekend only) history re-enactors to gawp at as well as architecture and culture. Meeting at the ‘McDonald’s’ at Barlborough, M1 junction 30 Monday 5th of May 8.00 for a semi-civilised 8.30 start (ish). Part 1 – ‘Getting there’ I recon about 1½ to 2 hours of steady riding should get us to the site, keeping to A and B roads where possible, they so much nicer. If I can sort out a bit of a stop on route, and time allows I will do so (Paul’s stomach being the limiting range factor here). Part 2 – ‘The Event’ Since I first picked out this place as a probable destination, they have gone and added a ‘special event’ happening on the site. I’m pretty sure everyone will enjoy it. It should be good fun. The first demonstration takes place at 11.00, so we really need to be in the place by then. Entrance to the site is £6.00 each, with a 20% discount for English Heritage members and OAP’s and the like. Part 2 - ‘Lunch’ Always a hot topic. There are eating facilities on the site, or we could all gang together, bring our own grub and do a group picnic thing. We will have to take a view at this on a club night beforehand. Part 3 – ‘The Return’ Not really thought about this yet. Visiting time was originally in the region of 1-2 hours to have a look round, but now there is an event on I’m sure that there will be things to see and do that might take us a bit longer to appreciate. The coast is not so far away and vaguely on the way home so that might be an option.
